How to Up-sell to a Customer
Bob gets a job at a hardware store as a sales assistant.
The manager asks, “Do you know how to up-sell?”
Bob replies, “I think so.”
The manager says, “I will up-sell to this customer coming in to show you.”
The manager says to the customer, “Can I help you?”
Customer: “I need a bag of fertilizer.”
Manager: “Will that be the five pound or the ten pound? I suggest the ten pound because that will last all summer.”
Customer: “I’ll take the ten pound.”
Manager: “OK. Do you need the firm rake or the spring rake?”
Customer: “Rake? I just need fertilizer.”
Manager: “Well, if you don’t rake up all the dead grass and thatch, the fertilizer can’t get to the roots.”
Customer: “Oh, I’ll take the firm rake.”
Manager: “Good. And would you like the riding mower or the push mower?”
Customer: “Mower? Why do I need a mower?”
Manager: “After you fertilize the grass, it will grow fast and you will need a mower to cut it. Your lawn will be the envy of the block.”
Customer: “Ah, then I’ll take the push mower.”
The manager finished the sale and came back to Bob, “Do you see how it’s done?”
Bob, “Yes, I’ll try on this next man.”
Bob: “Can I help you sir?”
Customer #2: “I need a box of tampons.”
Bob: “All right. Would you like the riding mower or the push mower with that?”
Customer #2: “Lawn mower?!? Why would I want a mower?”
Bob: “Well it sounds like your weekend is shot so you might as well mow the lawn.”
